The Old Switch-a-roo

I recently had to lay down the law here. Kata was insisting on changing outfits (and throwing a tantrum if she was denied) EVERY time she came upstairs. So...I had to lock her clothes up. Literally. This week I came around the corner and saw that she had found a new solution.

Had to write this one down...

Here's a picture that doesn't really have a story to go with it, except to admit that they always look so angelic as soon as cartoons are turned on...pretty cute picture, though if I do say so myself. And I have a story that (thankfully) doesn't have a picture to go with it, but I had to write it down for posterity. Yesterday, I took the girls to swim at the Pegasus pool for the first time in a while. We took a trip to the US at the beginning of May, and it's been really rainy since our return. Yesterday was sunny and hot, so off to the pool we went. About ten minutes in, Kata, who is wearing a back float, let go of me and was beyond thrilled to find that she could swim by herself. Her favorite way of doing things at the moment, BY HERSELF. So, for about half an hour she chased after balls and pool toys, kick, kick, kicking her little legs and motoring by herself around the pool (and don't worry, Mom. I was at a safe distance the whole time, because Norah is quickly coming a very competent swimmer herself!) Then she spotted the ladder at the far end of the pool. She had to have it. So she kicked and kicked and kicked. She swam all the way to the deep end and back. Twice. Unfortunately, she was so pleased with herself that her face was frozen in that wonderful, gigantic Kata smile the whole time which caused her to take on quite a bit of water. About two thirds back to the shallow end the last time, her belly decided it had had enough and she vomited. Twice. I turned bright red and swept her out of the pool as quickly as I could. She vomited three more times in the bushes. I took her into the bathroom to get cleaned up. Once she stopped throwing up and got over the shock of it all, Kata simply said, "Throw up! Swim? Swim!" Oh, Kata. Our child who never does anything half-way.

Snapshots

Just playing catch-up a bit and documenting a few more snapshots from our life here in South America. Every morning the girls run out in their pajamas and wave goodbye to Daddy:
They went on a carnival ride with their Dad that was probably older than the country of Guyana itself. I thought this one seemed less horrifying than the rusty old ferris wheel.
When we eat dinner on the screened-in porch, we prop our feet up afterwards and watch the bats come out as the sun sets.
Kata has developed a unique sense of style.
Kata navigating the fantastic jungle that is our toy room.
This one was, "Mom, take a picture of me with my eyes closed so I can see what it looks like!"
Kata's first BFF, Fiona Jones.
Norah at her school's Easter Hat Show. Unlike the show in the Promenade Gardens last year, Norah got serious stage fright this year and chose not to parade around. And she REALLY didn't want me to take pictures. Of course I did anyways.

Nothing Terrible about This!

Kata has entered the land of the terrible two's...but her birthday last Saturday was anything but. It had rained here all week, but miraculously the clouds broke Saturday morning, and we went out to our favorite spot at Marudi Creek for a little party with some close friends. All set up in the benab, the girls are ready to party!
Hi Kata!
Here's proof that I made a cake that actually did not melt (a first for me in Guyana...)
It rained briefly at lunch time, but it did not slow down the puddle jumpers.
Sunny again! Here's the birthday party crew:
Beautiful Marudi Creek. We had the whole place to ourselves!
Enthusiastic sister singing Happy Birthday.
Big girl Kata blowing out her own birthday candles!
After cake, back in the water for one more swim...
Satisfied. We swam, we ate, we sang, we ate, we swam. Happy Birthday, Dear Kata.

Jungle Easter

A four-day weekend here in Guyana meant we seriously needed to get out of dodge. So, we packed up the girls and went to Arrowpoint to "camp" in the jungle Saturday night.

Our girls on the boat, speeding through the black water through the jungle to Arrowpoint.

Jungle girls.

Saturday morning rainforest hike.

Thirty minutes in, the beginning of a serious jungle meltdown.

Back at the cabin.

Aah. Relaxation and guava juice.

Afternoon nap time-- Kata peeking out of her netted pack-n-play; Dad untangling Norah from hers!

Afternoon rain shower, and steam rising from the jungle.

Playing "the drums" in the lodge before dinner Saturday night.

Easter moonrise.

Happy Easter! Warm sun and a kayak ride.

Absolutely necessary Easter day kite flying!

Pizza Party

Mario's Pizza birthday extravaganza! Norah requested it and she got it-- Tinkerbell pizza party with her friends. We ALL had so much fun. Once again, Norah was right! Here's (a sampling of) the crew:

Kata and her love affair with our friend Christine. Whenever Christine is around, Kata wants to be held by her.

Pizza time! Frankly, I didn't think they'd actually stop playing long enough to eat.

But I was wrong. The pizza was a hit.

Friends! Happiness!

I found Kata running through the playspace with a fistfull of chocolate almonds. I asked her to sit down while she ate. This is the pose she gave me.

Tinkerbell party favors!

Pin on your wings!

Norah shared her party with our friend Penny, who was turning three. Here they are at the big moment! Norah is waving to her adoring dad.

Blow!

Cutting the cake (or "sticking" the cake, as the Guyanese say)

Part of the local tradition of "sticking the cake" is feeding the birthday girl. This is what it looks like when there are two birthday girls!

Four Happy Henrys.

All told, there was ONE bit lip and TWO knocked-out teeth (separate incidents) resulting in ONE emergency room visit. Our kids were too busy eating to be involved in either incident. All's well that ends well, it was quite a party!
